Ο Καναδός συγγραφέας και πολιτισμικός ακτιβιστής Stephen Jenkinson παρουσιάζει τη ταινία Griefwalker, ένα ντοκιμαντέρ του Καναδικού Εθνικού Κέντρου Κινηματογράφου στην Αθήνα.

Ο Stephen Jenkinson είναι και το θέμα της ταινίας, σε σκηνοθεσία Tim Wilson (2008).
Το Griefwalker είναι ένα λυρικό, ποιητικό πορτρέτο της δουλειάς του Stephen με ανθρώπους στα πρόθυρα του θανάτου. Γυρισμένο σε μια περίοδο δώδεκα ετών, το ντοκυμαντερ παρακολουθεί τον Jenkinson σε αιθουσες διδασκαλίας με γιατρούς και νοσοκόμες, σε συμβουλευτικές συνεδρίες με ασθενείς και τις οικογένειές τους, και σε αναστοχαστικές και συχνά αφοπλιστικά ειλικρινείς συζητήσεις για την προέλευση και τις συνέπειες των ιδεών του για το πώς ζούμε και πεθαίνουμε με τον σκηνοθέτη της ταινίας ενόσω κωπηλατεί ένα κανό.

Η ταινία θα προβληθεί στα Αγλλικά με ελληνικούς υποτίτλους και η συζήτηση που θα ακολουθήσει θα ειναι στα Αγλλικά με παραλληλη μετάφραση.

Ο Jenkinson διδάσκει διεθνώς και είναι ο εμπνευστης και ο κύριος εκπαιδευτής του Orphan Wisdom School.
Για πολλά χρόνια, και αφού μαθήτευσε με εναν παραμυθά ως νεαρός, και απέκτησε ενα μεταπτυχιακό στη θεολογία από το πανεπιστήμιο του Harvard και ένα δευτερο μεταπτυχιακό ως κοινωνικός λειτουργός από το Πανεπιστήμιο του Τορόντο, ο Stephen Jenkinson ηγήθηκε του τμήματος παρηγορητικής φροντίδας σε ένα μεγάλο καναδικό νοσοκομείο και ήταν βοηθός καθηγητής σε μια καναδική ιατρική σχολή. Έχει εργαστεί εκτενώς με φροντιστές, ετοιμοθάνατους και τις οικογένειές τους. Ενώ καθόταν διπλα στα κρεβάτια απο χιλιάδες ανθρώπους στο κατώφλι του θανάτου, παρατηρούσε ξανά και ξανά αυτό που αποκαλούσε «οικτρό άγχος». Ο Jenkinson το αντιλήφθηκε αυτό ως ενα σύμπτωμα μιας πολιτισμικής ελλειψης, μιας φοβίας θανάτου και μιας "αγγραματωσύνης πένθους", αντί ως ενα προσωπικό ζήτημα οποιουδήποτε ατόμου με τον θάνατο.

Αυτές οι εμπειρίες τον οδήγησαν να αποστάξει μιας σειρά ερωτημάτων: Ήταν πάντα τόσο δύσκολο να πεθάνεις; Πότε πραγματικά αρχίζουμε να πεθαίνουμε και τι πρέπει να κάνουμε τότε; Πώς γίνεται το πένθος να είναι μια δεξιότητα, κάτι που πρέπει να μάθεις και να εξασκηθεί; Αυτές οι ερωτήσεις αναμεταξύ άλλων είναι στο κέντρο του συγγραφικού του έργου.

Canadian Author & Culture Activist Stephen Jenkinson brings Griefwalker, a National Film Board of Canada documentary to Athens.

Stephen Jenkinson is the subject of Griefwalker, directed by Tim Wilson (2008).
Griefwalker is a lyrical, poetic portrait of Stephen’s work with dying people. Filmed over a twelve year period, Griefwalker shows Jenkinson in teaching sessions with doctors and nurses, in counselling sessions with dying people and their families, and in meditative and often frank exchanges with the film’s director while paddling a birch bark canoe about the origins and consequences of his ideas for how we live and die.
‘Griefwalker’ is currently being translated into Greek.

Jenkinson teaches internationally and is the creator and principal instructor of the Orphan Wisdom School.
For years, after apprenticing to a master storyteller as a young man, acquiring a master’s degree in theology from Harvard Divinity school and another in social work from the University of Toronto, Stephen Jenkinson led the palliative care department in a major Canadian hospital and was assistant professor in a prominent Canadian medical school. He has worked extensively with caregivers, dying people and their families. Whilst sitting at the deathbeds of over a thousand people, he encountered again and again what he called a “wretched anxiety.” Rather than any one individual’s personal issue with dying, Jenkinson understood this as symptomatic of a cultural absence, a death phobia, a grief illiteracy.
These experiences served to distil a number of questions: Has it always been this hard to die? When do we really begin to die, and what are we supposed to do then? How is it that grief is a skill, something to be learned and practised? Those questions and more spawned several books.
